The World’s Most Famous Shopping Streets

There are people who like to shop and then there are people who love to shop. I’m talking about the people who frequent the most famous stores and shopping centers from New York to Chicago to LA and even overseas.

If you consider yourself a serious shopper (or you aspire to be one someday), here are some of the most popular and iconic shopping streets in the world.

Fifth Avenue – Location: NYC, NY

This street is located in midtown Manhattan and has a reputation as being one of the most expensive streets in the world. Some serious shopping takes place on that street every day with people from around the world coming to check it out. Global chains are interested in setting up shop on this famous street because of its fame and prime location.

Michigan Ave. – Location: Chicago, IL

Michigan Avenue is the home of some of the most upscale and expensive stores and shopping centers in all of Chicago. The famous Water Tower Place is a huge shopping center located near the heart of the “Magnificent Mile”. The popular Westin Hotel and Spa is located on that street and it’s the home of the award winning Grill on the Alley restaurant.

Rodeo Drive – Location: Beverly Hills, CA

Versace, Chanel, Fendi, and Dolce & Gabbana are three of the most popular and expensive designer names and each one is available on Rodeo Drive. It’s a regular occurrence to come across models, actors and athletes getting some shopping done and walking by some expensive sports cars parked on the street. The buildings and hotels in the area have been in a lot of different movies and music videos because it is such a stunning location. There are some superb restaurants to experience as well – from Mr. Chows to Nate N’ All Delicatessen.

Champs-Elysees – Location: Paris, France

This street has possibly been in more movies than Rodeo Drive and it’s a very popular tourist attraction and shopping center. The street leads you to the Arc de Triomphe. Shoppers can pick up the latest fashion designs from Dolce & Gabbana, H&M and Abercrombie & Fitch. There are a number of bars and restaurants located close nearby so you can spend an entire day out there and then party into the night.

Bond Street – Location: London, Ireland

When you’re in London looking to shop the name is “Bond.” That’s the spot for jewelry, art work, fine cuisine and fashion. You will find chains like Donna Karan New York, Burberry, Boodles and Chaumet Paris, just to name a few.

These are just a handful of locations around the world where serious shopping is done. If you consider yourself to be a serious shopper but you haven’t been able to visit these locations yet mark them down on your to-do list and plan to make the trip one day.

Consumers and tourists spend millions of dollars on these streets and the stores that are located on them spend big dollars for the property. And the high-end shopping scene continues to flourish despite the economic struggles we continue to endure.

College Choices in Chicago

When you live in Chicago or are looking to move there to attend school, rest assured that you have plenty of options. There are dozens of colleges, universities, technical schools, and other places for higher education in the Chicago metropolitan area. The best one for you will depend on what you want to study, how much you can spend, and what academic atmosphere you desire.

University of Chicago
The most prestigious school in the city is the University of Chicago, which was founded in 1890 and is a world-class research college. The school has an enrollment of more than 15,000 and offers both graduate and undergraduate degrees in a wide variety of fields. It is consistently one of the top-ranked schools in the annual U.S. News and World Report rankings.

Northwestern University
Although it is technically in Evanston, Illinois, this suburb is just north of Chicago and is still very close to the Windy City. It is a very selective private school with an enrollment just shy of 20,000 students in its undergraduate and graduate programs. This school is an ideal option for athletes as well because it is part of the Big Ten athletic conference.

Illinois Institute of Technology
Budding scientists and engineers will enjoy studying at the Illinois Institute of Technology. This school offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in many subjects, but specializes in math, science, engineering, architecture, and related areas. This school is a great choice if you want to be near downtown because it is located just three miles from the center of downtown Chicago and is across the street from the White Sox baseball stadium.

DePaul University
This is the largest Catholic university in the United States, with more than 25,000 students enrolled in its six campuses scattered throughout the Chicago area. It is also one of the 10 largest private universities in the country overall. DePaul University has strong programs in commerce, music, law, and education, just to name a few of the nearly 300 undergraduate and graduate programs of study.

Roosevelt University
This university is home to six colleges, each with a different focus. One of particular interest is the Chicago College of Performing Arts, which has exceptional programs in theater and music that boast an enrollment of 600 students. The other colleges include education, arts and sciences, pharmacy, professional studies, and business. Roosevelt University has two campuses, one in the city and another just outside of Chicago for students who prefer a suburban location.

School of the Art Institute of Chicago
Known as SAIC, this school has some of the strongest programs in the arts available in Chicago. It is a small institution, with just 2,500 undergraduate students and less than 800 graduate students. Although its majors are all in the arts, it takes a liberal arts approach to study and requires students to take courses in other fields to support their development as artists. Most undergraduates earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, many with a focus in writing, art history, or art education.

Gear Heads

If you have ever browsed through the computer section of your local electronics outlet, a thought may have crossed your mind: why in the world is this stuff so expensive?  Well, the simple fact of the matter is that buying a computer from a store is more expensive than simply building one on your own.  Indeed, when you buy a computer from a store, you are paying for the process of putting that computer together.  You are paying another company to assemble the computer for you, and you are paying your store for the luxury of having access to the computer.  By setting out on your own and buying your own hardware , you can dramatically cut down on how much it is going to cost you to get a new, wonderful computer.  Of course, if you have never assembled your own computer before, then you are going to want to do a little bit of research before you start out.  Fortunately, it’s not a very hard process once you get your proverbial feet wet.

First and foremost, here, know that the central issue to buying your own hardware is that of compatibility.  Indeed, part of what you are paying for when you buy a computer from a store is guaranteed compatibility.  When you pay the premium, you simply do not have to worry about whether or not your graphics card is going to be compatible with your motherboard, and other similar issues.  Fortunately, hardware manufacturers are very direct when it comes to what their products are compatible with.  When you are looking into motherboards, for example, you are going to be able to read what they can accept.  This information can be cross referenced with the individual parts that you are going to buy—graphics cards, RAM, hard drives, DVD drives, and the like.  Since you are assembling the computer yourself, you are going to have to keep compatibility issues in the very front of your mind.

Moving on, here, you are going to want to be sure that you are doing some comparisons when it comes down to buying your hardware .  There are a lot of discount sites out there, so you are going to want to gather some prices before you settle on any particular part.  If you are trying to get a fair idea of what you are going to have to spend, then you should start out by pricing the parts that you need at a standard brick and mortar store.  Compare these rates to what you are finding online, and be sure that you are not paying any more than you have to.

Finally, here, when you set out to buy your hardware , you are going to have to be sure that you understand your warranties.  Unlike an assembled computer, your self-made computer is not going to have an all-encompassing warranty.  Your warranties are going to lie with your individual parts.  As you buy your parts, be sure that you are keeping track of their warranty information, lest you desire to leave yourself high and dry if they should happen to break.

The fact of the matter, here, is that you can get a lot more bang for your buck if you build your own PC.  If you know what you are doing, this is, without a doubt, the only way to do it.

The Malleability of Man

The beautiful thing about life is that it’s malleable.  Given the proper circumstances—circumstances that, admittedly, are not available to everyone—you can truly craft your life, your own future, and your own, unique version of happiness.  Of course, one of the best ways in which you could ever hope to spend your life is in the pursuit of a medical career.  Indeed, pursuing the vast world of medicine not only means that you’re going to be able to make a great deal of money; it means that you are going to be able to help other people, all the while experiencing a distinct sense of personal fulfillment.  Few careers are going to let you stretch your brain muscles quite as powerfully, and few careers are going to let you leave work quite this satisfied at the end of the day.  If you have never put any thought into the medical world, then now might just be the perfect time to start.

The first thing that you should know, here, is that you do not necessarily have to become a doctor to enjoy this field.  Indeed,  there are myriad other avenues that you could choose to tread, here.  An incredibly popular way to start out is to become some kind of medical assistant.  While these positions are, generally speaking, going to require that you obtain some kind of certification, they are not going to present the same, admittedly daunting barrier of entry.  Indeed, you can typically attend a trade school or a vocational school to obtain these kinds of certifications.  And the best part, here, is that you do not have to conform to a typical schedule to pursue these careers.  Most institutions that offer prep courses are going to offer night classes, meaning that you do not even have to quit your current job to start improving your life.  If you have never looked into these kinds of programs, then you’re going to want to begin doing so.

Of course, if you do not want to work as an assistant, then there are other things that you can pursue as well.  Believe it or not, there are plenty of administrative roles that you could perform at the hospitals and clinics that are in your area.  If you have a degree in finance or business administration, you can sell yourself as an asset to a hospital’s financial well being.  Indeed, these sorts of medical careers do not require that you study medicine.  They simply require that you are good (well, very good) with numbers.  And really, you are going to find that these careers are every bit as satisfying as their hands-on counterparts.  By facilitating the healthy operation of a hospital, you are, in effect, facilitating the health of its patients.  That will put a smile on your face each and every day.

Pursing a medical career is not nearly as hard as you might think that it is.  Just remember, there are tons of entry points in this industry, and tons of ways for you to leverage your natural talents.  So long as you are putting some thought into what you want to do, you are going to be able to find the healthcare avenue that works for you.  And truly, it cannot be said enough: this is one of the most rewarding career paths that you are ever going to find.

Vacation Shopping Online

One of the most exciting parts of preparing for vacation is finally having an excuse to revamp your wardrobe. You’re planning to snap a lot of photos while you’re cruising around the city, seeing the sites or relaxing on the beach, and you’re going to be sure you look good in each and every one.

The problem?

Shopping is time consuming. You’re already taking time off from work and school; between getting everything done before you leave, packing and doing laundry, finding time to shop is just asking a bit too much.

The solution?

Online shopping. You can browse stores on the web during breaks at work, during class, or even late at night after the physical stores are closed. You can buy on the Internet, or you can have a solid list ready to go when you buy from a store. Either way, you’re saving time.

Check out these tips for how to be a savvy vacation shopper without ever leaving your keyboard.

Shop for the Season

Check the weather where you’re headed and buy clothes that will suit the conditions. For instance, if you’re from a warmer climate and booking a Chicago holiday for February, it might be good to invest in snow boots, a coat, scarves, gloves or mittens. And maybe a back up of each wouldn’t hurt. Stay up to date with the weather and research the typical climate during that time of the year.

Shop for the Whole Family

Many sites offer a discount for buying in bulk, or spending more than a certain amount of money, usually at least $100. Buying for the whole family, friends or travel companions means that everyone can save on those pesky shipping charges.

Buy Early

The world of online shopping, unfortunately, leaves a lot of room for unknowns. Between shipments that mysteriously disappear somewhere within the Bermuda Triangle, arrive six months after you placed the order, or arrive in unrecognizable condition, you have to plan for the worst sometimes. While most websites and shipping companies have no problem getting you your packages on time, there are the occasional slip-ups here and there. Start buying early in case you have to make any exchanges or returns, and to be sure your clothes arrive before you return home from your trip. Otherwise, they’re not much use.

Think Outside of the Box

Besides just clothing, try to predict what items you think you might need for your upcoming vacation. Suitcases, GPS units, passport holders, ebooks or new music are other items that can make your traveling easier and more enjoyable. Think of what you need or use most while you’re traveling and check to be sure that all of your gadgets are in working order. Make sure you have enough batteries, adapters, chargers and cables for all the electronics you’ll use!

Keep Receipts

Be sure to hang onto receipts for all of your items. Maybe some of them didn’t work as expected while you were traveling, you didn’t use it, or you didn’t even take the product with you. Having receipts handy will make exchanges a breeze when you return.

With all your gear in tow and outfitted in new clothes, you’ll be ready take your vacation by storm. Or rather, by sun.

Avoiding the Viruses

I suppose that it’s the nature of our world: over time, things become sick, and sometimes they die.  This is most certainly the case with animals, humans, and plants—all of the things that we’ve come to recognize as “life”.  But the beautiful thing about humans in particular is that they’ve invented something lifelike that can’t actually die!  Do you know what that “something” is?  I’ll give you a hint: you’re using it right now.  That’s right: the computer!  Computers are all around us, and it takes a great deal of effort for them to kick the bucket.  Unfortunately, just like us, our computers become infected with viruses from time to time.  But never fear, reader, for there is always a way to eliminate your computer’s sickness and make it as good as new!  All that you have to do, here, is make sure that you are familiar with the process of safely removing viruses .

The first thing that you are going to want to do, here, is take a few preventative measures to protect your computer.  The safest, easiest, and smartest thing that you can do, here, is buy a protective program for your computer.  These programs are going to sit in the background, making sure that your computer does not become vulnerable to attack.  Indeed, these programs are going to be able to make sure that you are not downloading any malicious files, and that your registry (your computer’s brain, for the most part) is not being tampered with.

Now, it’s important to know that while these protective programs are going to go a long way when it comes to fighting viruses , they are going to need a little bit of help.  As you very well know, the internet is a constantly changing place.  While it would be great if hackers weren’t innovative people, that simply (and unfortunately) is not the case.  Indeed, each and every day, thousands upon thousands of new viruses are hitting the proverbial market, ready—indeed, itching—to do your computer harm.

Thus, in order to protect your computer, you are going to have to constant update your definitions.  Simply put, you are going to have to help your computer develop a healthy immune system (i.e. a big list of known problems).  Fortunately, this is not a hard thing to do.  Typically speaking, you are going to be able to set your computer up so that it downloads these definitions automatically.  You are not even going to have to worry about a thing, here.

Finally, if you truly want to avoid viruses , you are going to have to train yourself to avoid overly risky behavior.  Try not to steal software, music, or video games, as the sites that host these generally contain a lot of spyware and malware.  Also, do your very best to avoid opening attachments that come from people whom you do not know.  These attachments are often going to be malwares, so you have to be sure that you are not exposing yourself and your computer to harm, here.

There’s nothing that hard about protecting your computer if you use your proverbial noodle.  Just be sure that your behavior is not too risky, and be sure that you are keeping your protection software up to date.  If you can manage these things, then you’ve nothing to worry about!

Buying Gems Online: Be Smart

Shopping on the Web has made life at least 80 percent easier. While we once had to peruse jewelry stores for days, weeks or months looking for the perfect necklace or set of earrings, we can now hop online and see everything at once, from the convenience of our own homes.

But, with the luxury of convenience comes possible pitfalls. It’s sometimes hard to know exactly what you’re getting when you choose to buy off the Internet. Sometimes items arrive and look completely different from what you were expecting, and you’re stuck.

When buying gems online, being ‘stuck’ isn’t an option. You’ve paid the money and you want to make sure you get the product you were expecting. Check out these tips for how you can be smart about buying jewelry online and what you can do to avoid falling prey to Internet scams.

Only Buy From Reliable Sites

Stick to buying your diamonds only from absolutely credible sites. Large online retailers like Blue Nile that have a good track record, excellent user reviews and legitimate-looking sites are also a good bet. Though you might be tempted by the amazing deals from lesser, sketchier, websites, it will be more trouble than it’s worth in the end. Spend your hard-earned money wisely, and stick with the credible jewelers.

Do Your Research

Read up on the site you’re thinking of buying from before you even enter your credit card number. A simple Google search or a BBB search can yield amazing results. Also do your research in regards of choosing the best out of the type of gem you’re trying to buy. Being knowledgeable about the type of stone you’re interested in purchasing can help you make a more informed decision, scout out authentic gems and discard replicas. If you buy from a site with a good reputation, however, you won’t have to scrutinize the quality as closely.

Use Common Sense

You have to be realistic about what you know you can and can’t get for your money. You will not get a real diamond necklace for $19.99 plus shipping and handling, regardless of what the site promises. It’s impossible. Staying true to your instincts can save you a lot of money and heartache down the road! If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Move on.

Compare Prices

You can compare prices in one of two ways. First, of course, you can compare prices in the sense of shopping around and finding the best deal. But, you can also use other websites to compare a price that you’re wary of on another site. For instance, if you think the diamond necklace for $19.99 seems like a scam, but you aren’t sure, finding a similar product on several different sites and looking at the prices across the board can show you what a particular product should sell for. If the rest are all pretty equal in price, and one is an outlier, you can probably safely count it out as a viable option.

By following these tips, you can avoid losing out on a lot of money by buying from a bad site. Exercise caution when buying jewelry online, but know that there are definitely good deals to be had! You just have to sift the bad from the good.

Gifts for Granny

Giving gifts to grandparents can be pretty hard to do. You’re not sure what they need, what they use daily, what they enjoy doing or even what they are able to do. And, while you don’t want to ask and ruin the fun of the surprise, you want to be sure your gift is appropriate, right?

Check out these suggestions for what to get Grandma or Grandpa for their next birthday, family event or upcoming holiday.

The Gift of Safety

  • Home Alert: Safety is important for everyone, but especially for the elderly and especially if your grandparent lives alone. Investing in a life alert system can help keep Grandma or Grandpa safe even if they’re home alone, and give your family much needed peace of mind. A life alert is the perfect gift to give as an individual or even as a family.
  • New Bathtub/Shower: One of the biggest dangers for the elderly is the possibility of a serious slip or fall, and the bathtub or shower is one of the most common dangers. A new walk-in tub or shower will eliminate the need to step up and over a wet surface, lessening the possibility of a fall. With this risk eliminated, you’ll know that your grandparent is safe and sound each time they’re in the bathroom.

The Gift of Memories

  • Photo Album: Grandparents love to relive memories, but most probably aren’t too savvy with the latest point-and-shoot or SLR cameras. If you have photos lying around on your memory card of family gatherings for the past year, having them all printed and placing them in an album makes the perfect gift. Be sure to include labels, captions, dates or any other notes so Grandma and Grandpa know exactly what they’re looking at for years to come!
  • Home Videos: Your family undoubtedly has a few videos of birthdays, holidays, reunions or assorted get-togethers. Using a local editing service to have these older videos collected, converted to newer formats and complied onto one disc will make them easily accessible for the whole family, especially the grandparents.

The Gift of Company

  • Dinner, Movie or Shopping: If your grandparents don’t get out much, taking them out to lunch, dinner, a movie or even to the store could be great change of pace and a chance for them to get out of the house. Be sure to plan well in advance to give them time to get ready and save the date. Ask them what they like to eat and definitely let them choose the restaurant. If you go to a movie, do your research beforehand and be sure it’s something they would enjoy.
  • Bring Lunch or Dinner Over: If your grandparents aren’t able to get out of the house, bringing them a meal, cooking for them and hanging around the house with them for an afternoon or evening is a gift all on its own. Plan ahead, ask them what they’d like to eat, or what they’d like to have cooked. Maybe bring one of their favorite old movies to pop in as well. An afternoon or evening in is always great way to spend time with family.

These gifts are a great way to give your grandparents what they need the most, spend time together and reconnect if necessary. If you can’t afford items on your own, splitting with a family member or two makes the cost much more affordable!
